This sermon brings together two important themes: our gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans and our gratitude for the freedom Christ has won for us through His death and resurrection. These are not the same kind of freedom as we celebrate political freedom through our being citizens of this great nation. We celebrate spiritual freedom because of our citizenship in Heaven. One was secured by the sacrifice of brave men and women throughout our nation’s history. The other was secured by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.
This Sunday we celebrate both citizenships as we worship but our main focus will be on our citizenship in heaven as we gather around the communion table, remembering our Savior’s sacrifice for us.
Our scripture focus is on Luke 22:14-20 and Philippians 3:20 and the title of the message is, “Our Heavenly Citizenship.
